Course description
This is an introductory course for students that are not major in biology-related disciplines. There is no prerequisite course for students before this course. However, since this course is designed for junior students, it is anticipated that students should have taken (or taking) general chemistry or organic chemistry. In this course, we will introduce the basic chemistry of biological macromolecules, including proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids. A general description of how genes become a protein will be introduced. We will then introduce the basic structure and function of various compartments within a cell. Finally, specific topics including signal transductions and cytoskeleton will be introduced.
Grading policy
There will be two examinations for this course. The examination dates will be scheduled by the university. Both examinations are close-book examinations. The final score will be determined solely from these two examinations. From the experience of previous courses, students that skipped the classes and did not review the class materials usually failed this course. Thus, I strongly encourage students to attain the class and form a study group to review the class materials.
